What Do People Think About Staying At The Hotel Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas?

A special shout-out to the young lady in the Mar de Cortes main restaurant—she was amazing! The Krystal Restaurant had delicious food, and El Medano was perfect for lunch with easy access to the swim-up bar. I celebrated my birthday at the San Jose restaurant, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. The manager (captain) and staff made me feel like family as they celebrated with me.
I also had the pleasure of speaking with Ivanna, who was super helpful in giving me tips on what to do around the resort. Overall, everything exceeded my expectations, and I can’t wait to return!
What I wish I had known from the beginning of my stay is that the beach in town, about a third of a mile to the south, is quite swimmable. There, I was treated with the view of hundreds of tiny turtles crawling down to the ocean for the first time.
I got a good margarita as soon as I got to the hotel. The wine was OK.
Approximately one week before my arrival, I called the hotel directly and spoke with an employee named Israel. During the call, I requested two special arrangements to celebrate a personal occasion:
A congratulatory cake for my daughters
A bottle of champagne for my wife to celebrate our anniversary
Israel assured me that both requests were noted and would be arranged on two consecutive days during our stay. Unfortunately, neither of these requests was fulfilled, which was very disappointing given the importance of the celebrations.
Additionally, when we arrived at the hotel, the Junior Suite assigned to us was in an unacceptable condition. The room was extremely dusty and the bathroom was visibly dirty—as if it had not been cleaned at all prior to our arrival. I raised the issue with the manager, Alexa, who kindly offered us another room. However, upon inspecting it, we found that it was in even worse condition.
To make matters worse, the following day, although we were told someone would come to clean our room, no one did. I had to call just to request clean towels. While I appreciate the quality of food, entertainment, drinks, and general service outside the rooms—which were all very enjoyable—the cleanliness and preparation of the rooms themselves were far below acceptable standards. A clean and comfortable room is the most basic expectation, especially for personal space and rest.
On a positive note, I was glad to be in Cabo for a week and a half, combining both vacation and business. I also spent time at the Riu hotel and another property, and I must say the experience at the other hotels was significantly better.
I hope you take this feedback seriously and ensure improvements in housekeeping standards and guest communication. I would also appreciate follow-up regarding how this matter will be addressed.
Absolutely terrible experience!!! We found bed bugs in our room, which was a huge concern, especially since we were traveling with two 7-month-old infants. When we brought this to the front desk's attention, the staff was completely unhelpful. They refused to move us to a different room unless we paid for an upgrade. It's shocking that a hotel would not prioritize the well-being of its guests, particularly with such a serious issue and young children involved.
Furthermore, when we requested a mattress change, the cleaning crew only changed the bed sheets. The front desk later claimed the entire room had been examined and no bed bugs were found, despite the fact that I was in the room and witnessed the cursory inspection, which did not even involve flipping the mattress cushion.
After speaking with multiple hotel employees/customer relation managers, I was told they couldn't issue a refund and that I needed to contact corporate directly. The way this large resort chain is handling this HEALTH and SAFETY BED BUGS incident suggests a lack of seriousness and proper procedures for escalating issues. Instead, they've put the burden on the customer to escalate the problem themselves.
This entire experience was deeply upsetting and demonstrated a failure on the part of your staff and management to address a serious health and safety issue.
While the food was good, I've had better at other all-inclusive resorts and on cruises. That said, the drinks were excellent, and the overall dining and drinking experience was solid. The entertainment was fun, a little cheesy at times, but definitely kept us entertained.
You can't swim at the beach, but walking along the shore at sunrise was a beautiful experience and a definite highlight. Another highlight was taking an Uber to the marina and then a water taxi to the famous Arch.
The resort was beautiful and quiet. I would recommend this resort for a quieter more romantic experience, especially compared to the neighboring resort - Riu Santa Fe- which was a louder, younger crowd for sure.
Overall, I highly recommend Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas!
My only minor complaint was the confusion around the late checkout. I informed the front desk at check-in that I’d need a late checkout due to a late flight. They told me to return 24 hours before checkout to make the request. When I did so the morning before departure, I was told to come back again at 6 PM that evening—only to be told then that late checkout wasn’t available. It would’ve been better to receive a clear answer from the start. That said, they were helpful in storing our luggage and letting us use the showers so we could still enjoy the property before our flight.
The food was generally good, with a few standout dishes, and everything else about the experience exceeded our expectations.
Food is well below what standard Mexican fare can be in most cheaper places. Tacos are decent poolside. All dinner spots require a 1 hour wait even when the resort wasn’t full. Gym is horrible and a joke for how big of a hotel this is. Like 2 machines.
Beach isn’t accessible (I realize you can’t swim). There’s no beach bar service, and cabanas cost money
Santa Fe nearby has really fun parties that are worth going to.
Town is a 20+ minute uber each way or 1 hour walk.
Overall it’s just a mid resort and inconvenient for going to town. I would go once, but not repeatable.
It would probably be like a 3.7 stars. Rooms are extremely outdated and there’s not even a shower door. The food was good, especially the pizza and pasta at San Jose. Pools were great, probably my favorite part. The beach view of the Cabo Rocks was amazing. Garden view rooms basically was just a view of Riu Santa Fe.If I came back to Cabo, I’d go to a different resort. Service was nice too.
It might be the worst all inclusive resort I’ve stayed at.
However, the front desk service was, regrettably, still a major letdown. I remember thinking during my COVID-era visit that the rude behavior might be an exception due to the circumstances, but even four years later, the unfriendly attitude persists. It's a real pity, as it's the first impression guests receive.
Our room was decent, though the lack of ventilation in the bathroom caused an unpleasant smell to linger throughout our stay. Luckily, we spent most of our time enjoying the beautiful resort.
Overall, yes, I would still recommend the Riu. My hope is that with honest reviews like this, the management will address the front desk service, as it's truly the only significant flaw in an otherwise fantastic hotel experience.
The food was awful — bland, repetitive, and often cold. The buffet looked like it had been sitting out for hours, and even the specialty restaurants were underwhelming. We ended up leaving the resort to find decent meals in town.
The room was outdated and depressing. The furniture was chipped, the bed was hard as a rock, and the bathroom smelled like mildew. Not what you’d expect from a “Palace.”
The elevator smelled horrible, like sewage or mold — honestly made us dread using it. It clearly hadn’t been cleaned or deodorized in a long time.
To top it off, we were charged an extra “cleaning fee” at checkout that was never mentioned when we booked. Felt like a cheap money grab and left a sour taste at the end of an already bad stay.
Save your money — there are better resorts in Cabo. We won’t be returning to Riu.
This was by far one of the worst hotel stays I’ve ever had. The room was dirty, with cockroaches crawling around, and the bedsheets clearly hadn’t been changed. Despite booking for 3 people, there was no sofa bed provided.
The staff were rude and unhelpful unless tipped. At the buffet, the coffee machine didn’t even have milk—and it stayed that way for days without being refilled. The food overall was terrible, with barely any vegetarian options. Even the meat dishes were poorly prepared. The only decent dining option was the Italian restaurant, where the staff actually made an effort—but they kept running out of food.
The parties were another disaster. They refused to serve proper alcohol and instead gave out premade “shots” that had no real alcohol in them.
The worst part? We had a near-death experience at the beach and lost four phones. There was no lifeguard at the post at the time. When help finally arrived, the lifeguards didn’t know what to do—they only had basic, ineffective first-aid training. Despite this failure on their part, the hotel had the audacity to charge us for a doctor.
Management was absolutely useless. Stephano, one of the managers, was just being a complete douche—no apology, no remorse, no acknowledgment of the fact that a lifeguard was missing during a life-threatening incident. He didn’t offer help, support, or even basic empathy. It was like they didn’t care at all that guests nearly drowned.
Communication is a nightmare—none of the staff seem to speak English, which is shocking for a resort that claims to cater to international tourists. They were extremely petty about room keys and towel cards and constantly tried to charge guests for random things.
Avoid this place at all costs. It’s not just about poor service—it’s a safety risk. Not worth your money, your time, or your peace of mind.
The resort itself is beautiful and well-maintained, with stunning ocean views and a lively but relaxed atmosphere. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and spacious, making it easy to unwind after a day in the sun.
The food and drinks were excellent across all the restaurants and bars plenty of variety and consistently delicious. Whether lounging by the pool, enjoying entertainment, or just soaking in the beachfront vibes, every moment felt like a true getaway.
Highly recommend Riu Los Cabos for anyone looking for a memorable and smooth vacation experience in Cabo!
Housekeepers were nice and did a good job. I tipped them daily. You can't get in the beach, so we had to leave the resort and when we were out if there we took advantage and ate at different restaurants so we can enjoy good meals. Also, they have beach gazebos that usually at other hotels you have access because its part of the hotel but here you had to pay extra $50. Gym sucks. I will not be going to any riu anymore.
On a positive note, Orlando from the entertainment staff was awesome, and we really enjoyed all the activities. Pedro, our waiter in the buffet area, was also fantastic. We definitely plan to come back!
Ubers are not allowed to pick you up. It's about a ten minute walk with suitcases to the pick up spot - which is not signposted, or marked on the map. They also don't make this clear anywhere, so your first uber / or trip you will be very late for.
They also can't call the gateman and ask for a specific car to be let in, and say that going there to get the Uber (so it can pick up bags and other passengers) isn't allowed: so it is definitely not a security measure.
A taxi scam, where the taxis overcharge - and the hotel tries to prevent any alternative in return for kickbacks?
Ridiculous.
A minor issue - the signs around the restaurants showed Bombay as being open at 7 pm in the evening and also had a menu displayed. We went back at 7:30 pm for dinner only to see that the restaurant was closed and undergoing renovation!
Two days later it became a Mexican restaurant! No signs or fanfare or notification that a new restaurant was open on the property!
-A bridesmaid walked in on an male employee actively going through her purse in her room.
-A relative of the groom had all her jewelry stolen, including her wedding ring.
-We had all of our cash stolen from our safe, and to this day, we have no idea how they accessed it.
The worst part? Management did not care at all. Their response was dismissive—they simply told us to fill out a form and insisted no one besides guests had accessed the rooms (which was clearly false). There were no attempts to investigate, no compensation, and no accountability.
Even the police admitted this is a common issue at this hotel due to the lack of cameras outside the rooms. This resort does not take security seriously, and unfortunately, guests are paying the price.
If you value your safety and belongings, stay somewhere else.
The resort is absolutely stunning, with breathtaking ocean views, modern decor, and a luxurious atmosphere that made us feel pampered throughout our stay.
The drinks were top-notch, and the bartenders were always friendly and attentive.
One of the highlights of our stay was the incredible pool area—relaxing by the infinity pool with a cocktail in hand while overlooking the ocean was pure bliss. We left feeling completely refreshed and already can’t wait to return!
If you’re looking for a luxurious, family friendly with exceptional service, delicious food, and a relaxing yet lively atmosphere, Hotel Riu Palace Cabo is the perfect choice. Highly recommended!
Drink service is excellent, with staff frequently coming around to take orders. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and well-kept, with good service from housekeeping, including turndown service at night.
The food is great, with a variety of restaurants to choose from, including French, Japanese, Indian, Italian, and a steakhouse. The best part—no reservations are needed!
Between the three Riu resorts in Cabo, I would definitely recommend the Riu Palace for its beautiful setting, excellent service, and overall relaxing experience.
Only small complaint would be to have a little bit of a thicker blanket in the rooms- gets chilly with AC - luckily we had our own and that worked. All in all - great time!
Not to mention, in the dining area, there's a lady (Maricela) she goes above and beyond to make you feel like at home. She always has a smile on her face and prepares your table by the time you come back with your food.
Beds are comfy and amenities are refreshed daily. Be sure to take some time to sit somewhere and listen to the ambient noises to relax and do nothing for a bit
Several food options, all basically buffet style as expected. Very Americanized options, would have like a spot or two with something a bit more local. The few sit-down style table service options had limited menus and creativity, but it was all good.
Booze flows and fast if that's your thing. Multiple pools, some louder than others.
Rooms are fine but depending on where you are, can be a long walk.
Certainly caters to the tourist crowd, not crazy, but if you weren't in Mexico, you could be on any Gulf of Mexico beach resort in the States...
