Upon landing at the Cancun international airport, and getting your luggage, you’ll be greeted with purple signs to Xcaret, in which you’ll be asked to sign-in, and wait for a few other travelers heading to the resort. You’ll then be invited to board the air conditioned bus that takes you to Hotel Xcaret Mexico.
The bus ride from the airport to the resort takes about 50 minutes. The bus itself has outlets to charge your phone, laptop, and other electronic devices. Once you get to the actual resort, you’ll be asked to go straight to the check-in line, and avoid the luggage traveling on the bottom of the bus, you’ll get this luggage, once you’re actually in your suite.
Once you’re in the check-in line, you’ll wait your turn to check in. Once it’s your turn at the registration counter, you’ll be given the option to upgrade your room(if available) at a discounted rate. You’ll also be assigned a concierge that will lead you through the hotel, to your room.
Once you’re in your hotel suite, your concierge will go over some valuable information with you in regards to the resort, and help answer any questions you may have. They’ll also help you plan an itinerary to get the best out of your visit. By this time, you should also be receiving the rest of your luggage, that was traveling with you on the bottom of the bus, from the airport ride.
The resort has over ten restaurants, most of which are free, with only one or two being paid. Since these are very popular all inclusive restaurants, they are always busy, so seating might be very limited, depending on the time of the year that you’re visiting. It’s strongly recommended to speak with your concierge to see if they can book you a reservation at any of the restaurants you want to try. Another alternative would be to enter “El Mercado”, which is a buffet style restaurant with plenty of delicious food and drinks.
Aside from great restaurants, the resort also includes free tours to experience the natural wonders of the region, such as Cenotes (natural underground caves with water), and taking tours to ancient Mayan ruins such as Cobal and Chichenitza.
In addition, the best thing about staying at Hotel Xcaret Mexico is that you have access to all of their adventure parks for free. These adventure parks, put Disneyland and Universal Studios to shame when it comes to fun and entertainment for the family. You’ll find everything from riding ATV’s and zip-lining through the jungle, to snorkeling and relaxing in the ocean. Most of these theme parks have all inclusive buffets included, and the food is without a doubt world class. You’ll find something for everyone.
While you’re there it is strongly recommended to go see the Hotel Xcaret Espectacular Show (which is also included with your stay at the resort). It’s a world class show that shares the overall story of Mexico, but it’s done in a very spectacular way. You’ll absolutely enjoy the show, which is about two hours long. Afterwards, just take the nice 10 minute boat ride, back to the resort.
The checkout process could take a while, so make sure you plan accordingly. Once you’re ready to check out of the hotel, you’ll first want to go to the registration counter where you had originally checked in, and sign the checkout document, this is in case you have any pending debts. Once you check out, you should be able to return to your room to pick up your luggage, and then board a bus to the airport. Make sure you inform yourself of the times the bus goes to and from the airport, so you don’t potentially miss your flight.
You’ll board the bus that heads back to the airport, where you’ll thank the Bus driver, and make your way through the airport gates, and head to your airline check in counter, and proceed with the rest of your trip.

Hotel Xcaret Mexico Reviews
The restaurants are plentiful, but the quality is inconsistent. Many sauces taste the same, ingredients repeat across menus, and even their steakhouse felt subpar with tough cuts and none of the traditional touches you expect from a Brazilian-style experience. For the price point, the food simply doesn’t meet luxury standards.
Service was the biggest issue. Staff repeatedly pushed promotions and upsells, following guests around with offers that felt tacky and out of place for a “luxury” resort. Everything is extremely expensive and feels driven by money above experience. Their membership program also comes across as questionable, with guests investing thousands in exchange for discounts that don’t feel worthwhile or high-end. On top of that, people booking through Costco get noticeably cheaper rates, which creates an odd dynamic for guests paying full price and further dilutes the sense of exclusivity.
Our room at Casa Fuego added more frustration. The AC didn’t work and made a loud sound all night, and even after reporting it, nothing was fixed. A light bulb exploded at midnight, which could have seriously injured someone. The shower wasn’t functioning properly either and needed repair. None of these issues should ever occur at a true five-star property.
As for the wedding itself, it was extremely expensive and still not handled with the level of care we expected. The flowers didn’t match what I requested, and housekeeping issues caused an accident where I nearly broke my teeth. It was disappointing, especially for such a meaningful event.
Hotel Xcaret is visually incredible, and the concept has potential, but the service, food quality, and overall guest experience simply do not meet the standards of a true luxury hotel. For the prices they charge, and compared to genuinely high-end properties like Grand Velas, it falls short in almost every way.
Rooms are nice and clean, the servers make you feel at home. Location is great, an hour away from the Cancún airport.
The only downside, and this is something that it's being going for a long time.
Is the check in, this is ridiculous we got to the resort at 4:30 pm. and we got our room at 6:45 pm. This needs to charge and get better.
Pros:
- Gorgeous architecture and views.
- Nice room with fun details.
- Great choice of restaurants including excellent breakfast buffets.
- The included parks (in particular Xcaret and Xplor).
- Most of the staff are great and speak English if needed.
Cons:
- 1 hour to check in is unacceptable. Marriott checks in guests in 2-3 minutes. It shouldn’t take them 10-15 minutes per person.
- Concierge service was awful. We spent over two hours booking things and often our bookings weren’t honoured. Tip: get every booking and cancellation in writing as their IT systems seem to be from the 1980s.
- Not enough signage. Cuevas and Bio are hard to find. Kids slide area is great but hidden.
- Buses to parks are frustrating. The short distance from Xplor and Xcaret can take somehow 20 minutes as you drive all over the place, and they cram you in like sardines so most people are standing. Need a simple train system, or more boats and more buses.
Overall a wonderful if frustrating experience. All of the above is fixable with a little investment.
On August 25, we upgraded from our original Garden Suite to a River View room, but the upgraded room’s floor was flooded with water. We immediately requested to move back to our original Garden Suite the next day (August 26), and the front desk confirmed the change. They clearly told us that we would receive a $420 refund within 30 days and said there was no need for a receipt because it would be processed automatically.
However, it’s now been months — no refund has ever been issued, and the hotel has completely ignored our follow-up emails. We even filed a credit card dispute, and shockingly, the hotel denied ever agreeing to the refund, despite our documented request and their verbal confirmation at the front desk.
This experience has been incredibly frustrating and unprofessional for a resort of this caliber. The property itself is beautiful, but guests should be aware that the hotel does not stand behind its promises or respond when issues arise.
I hope management takes accountability and improves their communication and refund process so that future guests don’t experience the same.
However, we were very disappointed with the food. One of the main reasons we chose this resort was because they advertise exceptional dining, but unfortunately the food did not meet those standards.
What made the dining experience even worse was the service. My husband and I speak Spanish, and every time we would speak to the staff in Spanish, they would switch to English once they realized we were from the United States. Many times we couldn’t even understand what they were saying because we were trying to communicate in Spanish, our first language. It was confusing and frustrating — we didn’t understand why we couldn’t simply speak Spanish at a resort in Mexico.
This happened mostly at the restaurant near the beach. It made us feel uncomfortable and took away from the experience.
I’m honestly shocked at how bad my experience was at this hotel, especially for the outrageous price they charge. I came expecting top-quality service and a relaxing stay, but instead I dealt with rude and unhelpful staff ( Manager) who clearly couldn’t care less about their guests. I asked for help, I was met with attitude or ignored completely.
The whole experience was stressful and disappointing. For what they charge, this hotel should be offering exceptional service — not making guests feel like a burden. I’ve stayed at far cheaper places with much better hospitality. Save your money and book somewhere that actually values its guests.
Overall, this hotel does not live up to its “luxury” reputation. food didn’t even taste good.
After it rained, a large puddle of water would collect outside our room and wasn’t cleaned up for quite a while — I almost slipped there a few times, so that’s something to watch out for.
The shuttle buses between the hotel and parks were super convenient — they run every 20 minutes and make getting around effortless.
Our favorite restaurants were Teatro, Costeru, Bio, Xin Gao, and Tama-mon — all had great food and service. We also tried Mercado, Trajnera, La Xentral, and La Cantina. We didn’t enjoy the buffets as much (like Mercado) because most dishes weren’t clearly labeled as vegetarian, which made it harder to choose. Also, while the staff asked about our dietary restrictions at every restaurant, the buffet staff didn’t offer much guidance on which dishes to avoid. They simply noted our restrictions but didn’t assist further, which made dining a bit confusing.
Tip: Email the resort before your trip to request a wishlist. It’s really helpful for reserving certain parks and restaurants in advance, as some of them require bookings.
The spa? Heaven. The food? Out-of-this-world good. Every meal was an experience — fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Whether we were relaxing in the pool, exploring the grounds, or floating into a bliss coma at the spa, it was unforgettable.
This is one of those rare places that truly exceeds the hype. 10/10 would happily move in. 🏝️🌿
